Lamentations - Moikup Longcha (BA 6th Semester)

Where is love?
Where is peace?
I don’t feel any of it,
For I see only tears of pain.
Every morning when I wake up,
I hear the screams of killing and corruption,
And of wars demanding freedom,
While no one knows the reason for bloodshed.
No one cares for someone’s life,
And what grows is hatred,
Which in turn brings fear.
Can anybody hear the cries of souls?
Does anybody see the pain of love?
Where is humanity?
What on earth is happening?
Alas! These are unanswerable questions.
Who are we to blame,
The leader? The politician?
Do I dare blame religion?
Thousands have lost their lives,
And people fear people.
We are living, just waiting to escape,
This funny, cruel, and evil world.

In Memoriam - Sosangmar (BA 4th Semester)

Like waves of the sea, our days are gone,
And this little life is undone.
When in the wee hours I saw the glimmering light,
Your home, it came to my sight,
Blissful childhood memoirs to forfeit.
It embraced me with a warm gentle touch.
But alas! This dreamland wouldn’t last.
For away from home I had wandered such,
This blessed thought is like chasing a cloud.
That gifts me a benign cruel blow,
And yet fills my soul with thy glow,
To survey this land with a thought.
Everything in its season leave memories,
Only some are as special as yours.

A Requiem - Vinika Chishi (BA 2nd Semester)

Restless souls craving muses.
“Lay your feet on the crisp grass,
Feel the wind so fair, the sun so warm.”
And fainter grow the voices of nature.

Helpless beings trees are.
If movable they were,
I often do wonder,
Would they shift,
Like the cart that shifts bricks?

Yellow, red, green, and brown,
Colours taken for granted.
Trees, they say, “Our leaves fall,
Stop for a moment, smile...live!”

For their fate is iron clad.
Those memories they held, rooted deep,
Perhaps they stand firm to this day,
Telling us, “There is no place like home.”

The tranquil fresh air,
The music of the breeze.
We will mourn the emptiness,
Mourn indeed.

For they love us humans,
They would lay their branches,
And trunks would be bared,
All for our convenience.

Maybe some scorching day,
Someone will stand there and lament,
“Something is missing…
Something that was so wonderful.”

 Little did they know,
A faithful friend had they,
Who now is forever lost.
Modernity comes, but at what cost!

Confessions of a Nervous Mind - Vini H Aye (BA 2nd Semester)

And now is the time,
For garnering what was sowed.
All things in the world,
Seem like awaiting a rebirth.
The beginning is unknown,
The past is unforgettable,
And the future is unpredictable.
As minds shiver,
And hearts grow cold,
Everything dons a pale demeanor.
Things that we everyday do,
Today seems all new.
The winter seems chillier,
And fears of a tempest prevail.

All we need to do,
Is to stand firm and strong,
By faith, by hope, and by truth.
It’s time to face fears,
Gather rewards and prove,
Our destiny and future,

All inscribed on those faithful boards.

A Sonnet on Solitude - Tokavi Achumi (BA 4th Semester)

It often weakens,
Fills with sorrows and pains,
And like a house without a backyard,
It doesn’t fade into oblivion.
It’s like a parasite,
Which remains blind and deaf.
Moments seem to last for eternity,
And nothing seems viable.

Contentment is a virtue to be learnt,
And patience is a ware to deal with it.
You can fool its vast magnanimity,
With cheer, and a good spirit.
It shall perish away like the first bloom,

At the luscious dawn of glee.

Eternal Love - Vini H Aye (BA 1st Semester)

Thy word became flesh,
Ye blessed the world and around.
Beauty compared to none;
All mortals exalt thee.

Ye heals pain, soothes the broken,
Set what’s best for every soul.
Oh! Great is thine love,
Transforming sinners to new beings.

No soul breathes in thy absence,
No soul lives without thy love.
Ye brightens the path,
And leads in the pious way.

Blessed is me having thy grace,
All of me adoration for thee.
No turning back, thou art with with me
Your love is sufficient for me.

Beloved - Buhiu B Lam (BA 6th Semester)

The day I was born was the greatest day for you.
With joy you introduced me to the world.
Alas, you didn't wait to celebrate my first birthday.
The thought of you brings tears to my eyes.
Forever you are etched in my heart.

They tell me of your kindness, gentleness,
They tell me how you cared.
It hurts me and I envy... I missed all your goodness.
A night with you in my dreams is the happiest of all.
Wish to go on dreaming, but the dawn doesn't permit.

On cloudless nights I look up at the sky,
And there I watch the stars twinkle.
I sing my evening song to them,
I know you are in their midst.
I wait for your lullaby to wish me goodnight.

My friends all greet and gift,
Their kind mothers on this good day.
I always wish to give you the best I can.
I mournfully wonder why the heavens took you away.
Tales of your love for me heal me.

Seasons change, years pass, things renew,
But my hope in you stays the same.
Watch me...
Protect me...
I love you mom.

A Perfect Christian - Lhichelo Khutso (BA 2nd Semester)

If we want to be a perfect Christian,
Always be gentle and humble.
Be immune to sin,
And never ever stumble.

If we want to be a perfect Christian,
Always study and remember,
All of God’s commandments.
He who is trustworthy, and merciful.

Peace and harmony find expression,
In this wonderful God of mine.
He never forsakes,
Forgives, or ever forgets.

We perhaps cannot be perfect,
So we always need to pray,
For the power to do our best,
To love God and obey.

Fiery Stars - Ighali Sylvia Shikhu (BA 2nd Semester)

Story of the old and dying ambers,
Old norms conquered by the future.
The bitter truth of the new era,
Resonates in whispers, and hushed voices,
In graves, of kings and men.
Of freedom and free men,
Blotches on the innocent,
And sinners trod with pride.
Yet mounting, drooling for better,
Those were the days I say.
When in times of rage and utter fury,
The symphony of chaos created mad ballads.
As I dance forlorn, enslaved I am,
For the betrayal tightens me.
Each step counted, and counted twice.
Will I be the first to witness?
A forlorn vision of my stars ablaze,
Is it too late to rhyme with fire?
The fiery stars gaze upon me,
My rage, my wrath, my anger,
Reflected in their immortal rays.

Ode to Lost Peace – Neingusenuo Kin (BA 2nd Semester)

The leaves had fallen,
The dust had settled.
The streets, lonely.
All that walked past it, the winds.

And mournful was the skies.
Just clouds, darkened clouds.
What had happened,
To this street always filled with joy?

The stars, they shone no more,
Something was wrong, terribly.
Something had been lost forever.
Was it on the streets or heavens above?

Something ought to change,
Or is it us, humans
Who have altered His divine plans?
Peace, the elixir for our liberty.

And so it was,
The brave tower stood still,
Though frozen in shock and grief.
Anguished pathos runs shrill.

The Elixir Called Music - Pithungo Shitio (BA 2nd Semester)

In every walk of my life,
From kindergarten till today,
There hasn’t been a single day,
That I miss listening to my songs,
From Boom-box to the Speakers.

Music is stained in my soul.
Bliss was when I learnt of it.
Being completely attached to it,
Gives my mind undying peace;
The musicians of the world.

From the King of Rock and Roll,
To the legends which people remember,
Music of all sorts fills my abode,
As I etch tunes in my heart,
Creating timeless memories forever.

From the rapper Jay-Z to pop Madonna,
Elvis, to Westlife, and Moffats,
Every single song that’s composed by them,
Is a retelling of their life so real,
And they compel me to listen.

And wherever I may be,
At home, at college, or at the park,
My ipod, I never leave it behind.
My portal to the world of music,
Keeps me spirited on the gloomiest days still.

Oh dear music, melodies, and symphonies!
Gratitude for pleasing my soul.
This life is nothing without you.
You are my passion, you are my culture,
Till I bite the dust and bid adieu.

To The Land of Eternal Smiles - Moanungsang (4th Semester)

The agonies
of life
Is what I fear.
I long for death to come,
To free me from despair,
To a haven of my own
Where I would feel no pain.
Where I would smile.
And all worries would be slain.
Death, I ask of you
To take me there,
To the place where
My soul would be free,

And I would smile again with glee!
